News & Updates 9/13/24

From Amy:

As the second week of school wraps up, I continue to be impressed by the students and their teachers. This is an incredible group of kind, supportive, and respectful children. I shouldn’t be surprised by this fact: this community cares deeply for each child and works to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the school's routines and rituals and learning more daily about the workings of the New School.

I hope you’ll join us next Wednesday night at our Back-to-School Night and the Annual Meeting. This is an essential evening for parents to get a closer look at what’s ahead for their children this year. Teachers work to prepare presentations that give insights into each grade level and subject area. The hope is parents will leave the evening feeling more informed about our curriculum and the learning experiences that we value at New School.

The evening begins at 6:00 pm in the New School building. The Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees launches the event, providing parents with information about the Board’s important work. We’ll move to classrooms at approximately 6:30 pm. Families with Upper School children will follow a schedule to hear from each academic area, while Lower and Early School families will spend time in classrooms, learning about the curriculum, yearly events, and more. The evening will conclude by 7:45 pm.

I love Back-to-School night because it’s a wonderful chance for the entire adult community to come together. While it’s not the time for parents to have individual conferences with teachers, it’s wonderful to connect with friends and see the spaces where children spend their days.

Finally, we have decided to shift the date of the Back-to-School picnic, moving it to Friday, October 4th, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. This will allow for the Upper School students to join us, something that wouldn’t have been possible with our original date due to the camping trips. This Family Fest will be a great opportunity for us to come together as a full community, children and all adults in the community.  Please adjust your calendar and plan to join us on Friday, October 4th!

I can’t wait to see you on Wednesday evening, September 18th, for our Back-to-School event.

Warmly,

From Dr. Eddie Wilkin
Director of Nantucket Island Youth Orchestra
Music Teacher at Nantucket Intermediate School

Dear Nantucket Families,
I hope this message finds you well! We are excited to invite your child to be a part of the Nantucket Island Youth Orchestra (NIYO) this school year. Whether your student is just starting out or already has some experience playing an instrument, NIYO offers a unique opportunity for young musicians to grow, collaborate, and perform in a supportive environment.

Our rehearsals will take place after school, and we understand that many students have other commitments, such as sports or other extracurricular activities. To help accommodate busy schedules, we are asking that students aim to attend at least 2 out of the 4 rehearsal days each month. This will allow them to stay engaged with the group while balancing their other activities.

To learn more about our program, including rehearsal dates and sign-up information, please visit our website: Nantucket Island Youth Orchestra.

If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Keep Smiling,
Dr. Eddie Wilkin
