News & Updates 9/6/24

From Amy:

What a spectacular start we’ve had at the New School! In my lifetime, I’ve had over 50 “first days” – and the first day at the New School did not disappoint. Some of the highlights for me included meeting the students and starting to learn their names. I am committed to knowing every student by name by the end of September, and I’m well on my way. From all of the 8th graders to many others, it’s important to know students well and greet them by name daily.

We gathered as a learning community for an all-school “First Day” photo. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm and kindness of the group, including our youngest Early School students, settling in for a photo opportunity with over 200 people! 8th graders Alex and Finley jumped in to help me run the Morning Meeting, modeling the routines of the New School Morning Meeting and leading the Birthday Song. It was a wonderful First Day!

I was also incredibly impressed with the kindness in the community. Students made excellent eye contact and welcomed me with confidence and genuine interest. “How was your move to the island?” or “It’s nice you’re here.” I am enjoying the warmth and care of this extraordinary school community.

This summer, administration members (the Op-Ed Team - operations & education) met to discuss systems and structures. This group includes Danielle Beale, Associate Head; Matt Liddle, Head of Upper School; Anne Broadus, Head of Lower School; Megan Solimeo, Head of Early School; Lori Corry, Chief Finance and Operations Officer; and me, as Head of School. One shift will be sharing information through ONE email weekly, on Fridays. Parents can expect to hear from the school on Fridays, including a compilation of news and information from areas in the school, important dates, and more. Parents can expect to hear specific information about class activities, tests or projects, and other important events from teachers directly. Our hope is this will streamline communications and reduce the number of emails that you receive.

Important dates to mark on your calendar include:
Wednesday, September 18, 2024:  6:00 - 8:00 pm     Annual Meeting & Back-to-School Night
Friday, September 27, 2024:  4:00 - 6:00 pm     Family Picnic

Please take a moment to introduce yourself (and maybe even reintroduce yourself) to help me learn your names, too! I am delighted to be part of the New School community and look forward to getting to know your children and your families well!

Warmly,

Jiu Jitsu
Andre will be offering kids Jiu Jitsu classes Monday through Thursday at the yurt starting this Monday, September 9th.
Classes for ages 4 through 6 will be 2:45 to 3:30.
Classes for ages 6 through 10 will be 3:35 to 4:15.

Andre will escort PK/K children from school to the yurt at the end of the day. Students for the 3:35 class will need to be supervised by a parent if they would like to stay on the property until class. Parents are welcome to stay and watch but are not obligated.

These classes will be focused on the basics and are designed for children with less than six months of experience. If your child took a break over the summer, or would like to try jiu jitsu for the first time, this is an ideal time to join.

Contact Andre at purejiujitsu.ack@gmail.com, to learn more.
