From Danielle:

Morning Meeting
Fourth grade led morning meetings this week, and today’s word game was tricky. We had to guess what the fourth graders would bring to a picnic when provided with a string of words that had something in common. In a particularly difficult example, what else would the fourth grade bring to a picnic if they’re already bringing a pear, a roll, and bread?

(I’ll give you a hint: pear, pair, roll, role, bread, bred… All homophones! Words that sound the same but have different meanings. Tough, right?!)

Even the faculty and staff were stumped. We kept at it, though, and by the end, we were all laughing and giving examples. Well done, Laura and the fourth graders!

New Moon
Today was one of those beautifully bright, mild January days. I was chatting with a teacher making copies in the office, and we both agreed that the students were having a great day. She thought for a moment, and said, “Of course! It’s a new moon!” It is a known fact that many educators believe the energy of the students and the class follows the cycle of the moon. Whenever a class has a tough day, we say “It must be a full moon!” I had no idea that a great day at school could also be explained by the moon, but I am a believer!

Moments of Gratitude
Today I had several faculty and students stop me with moments of gratitude. One teacher was excited to begin working on a new capstone curriculum, and grateful to be in a school where he felt he could stretch. One student was excited to see an old friend who was visiting and felt grateful to be able to show them around. Another teacher was happily surprised to find that several students wanted to re-take their iReady assessment, and grateful that she was in an environment where the students are so motivated.

What prompted such an outpouring of gratitude? Must be the new moon! Have a wonderful weekend.

Warmly,
Danielle Henry Beale
