The holiday season is upon us and the excitement is palpable at Nantucket New School! Sharing during morning meetings this week has been about upcoming travel and visits with family, special preparations for special events, the countdown to Hanukkah, breaking out the Advent calendars, and the arrival of an “Elf on the Shelf” or two!
Earlier this week, our 7th grade led a presentation on Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, which is celebrated this year from December 7th through December 15th. We will have a menorah in the Great Hall that we will light each of the 8 days of celebration. To the families in our community who celebrate Hanukkah, we wish you a Chag Sameach.
Also in the Great Hall, we have a Christmas tree decorated beautifully with white lights, red ornaments, drumsticks, and a tambourine tree-topper. (I bet you can guess which teacher decorated the tree this year! And speaking of Christmas trees, we got together in our Big Friend/Little Friend groups to create one-of-a-kind ornaments and garlands with which to decorate five of the trees downtown. Make sure to check out all of the New School trees, located this year between 32 and 46 Center Street. Last but not least on the tree-front, make sure to visit the Festival of Trees at the Whaling Museum to see the NNS Cubist Self-Portraits Christmas tree designed by Art Teacher Jenny Gammil with ornaments created by our 1st and 3rd graders in art class.
