From Danielle:

Estimation Station
If you’ve been in the Great Hall this fall, you have probably seen a large jar filled with objects with pencils and slips of paper nearby. This is our new Estimation Station! Students are encouraged to use their math skills to estimate the number of objects in the jar. In September, the jar was filled with connecting cubes. When the results were announced, it was revealed that there were 298 cubes in the jar.

This month, the jar was filled with candy corn. Students were encouraged to use previous knowledge (298 cubes fit in that same jar) to make their estimation. Are the candy corns larger or smaller than the cubes? Do you think there will be more or fewer candy corns than cubes? Some of our older students have been estimating the volume by counting how many candies fit along the length, width, and height of the jar. So much great math talk!

Next week, we will reveal how many candy corns are in the jar and announce the member of each grade whose estimate came the closest. Will anyone be exactly correct? We shall see!

Warmly,
Danielle Henry Beale
Interim Head of School
