Head's Letter

It's Time

Head’s Letter 6/15/2017

June 15, 2017

Dear Carol Evens,

When I first came to Nantucket New School and Strong Wings Adventure School in the winter of 2012, I knew that there was something special about the place.  The warm feeling I got was difficult to quantify then, but it was one of the driving forces that led me to accept the offer to be Head of School/Executive Director.  As I finish my fifth year here, that special feeling is stronger than ever.  The amount of love and respect that the administration and teachers have for the students and each other is the essence of what makes these schools so unique.

Nantucket New School and Strong Wings are exceptional schools, and I am proud and thankful to have spent six years of my professional life leading them.  A Head of School colleague once told me that “the trick to being the best Head of School possible is knowing when it’s time to leave the school you love – not when it’s easy to, not when others want you to, and not even when you are completely ready to – simply when it’s time.”  After long hours of reflection and conversations with my family, I am convinced that it is time for me to move on.  The 2017-2018 school year will be my last at Nantucket New School and Strong Wings.

I write to inform you of my decision now, so there will be ample time for the search for my successor and for the transition.  Please know that I will help with the search for a new Head as much as is desired and that the energy I put forth in leading the school in the coming year will not waiver .

Sincerely,

Jonathan K. Alden
