I believe that each child is imbued with a particular learning style and a unique set of academic strengths and needs. This intellectual diversity greatly enhances the overall learning environment. Consequently, it is my mission as an educator to address this heterogeneity by maintaining a certain level of flexibility in terms of my teaching methods and objectives. Standardization is antithetical to this goal. It is imperative to design the lessons according to the students’ needs rather than molding the students to fit the lessons. Moreover, an educator should provide the tools necessary for students to think critically in this exceedingly complex world. It is crucial for teachers to avoid succumbing to the pitfalls of indoctrination. Students should be taught how to think, not what to believe. As Yeats so astutely surmised, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of the fire.”
